Dhul-Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic calendar, is right around the corner. So, it’s time to start preparing for Qurbani!
Completing Qurbani, also known as Udhiyya, is an essential part of being a practicing Muslim. The act of slaughtering an animal is done to commemorate the sacrifice that the prophet Ibrahim (AS) was willing to make to display his great faith in Allah (SWT). After the animal is slaughtered, its meat is distributed to friends, family, and the less fortunate.
Who must slaughter what animal?
If an individual is able to pay Zakat, they are eligible to perform Qurbani. And since Qurbani is mandatory for all members of the family, including children, parents must accommodate Qurbani contributions on behalf of their children, where necessary.
Typically, Muslims will opt for a goat as the animal of choice. However, cows, bulls, buffalo, sheep, and camels are also viable options. It’s important to note that animals that are weak, young, blind or otherwise physically disabled, and those that have broken horns or no teeth are not eligible for selection.
When and how must Qurbani be completed?
The animal must be slaughtered between the 10th and 12th days of the month of Dhul Hijjah. Saying the Takbeer (“Bismillahi Allahu Akbar”) at the time of sacrifice will ensure a successful and acceptable Qurbani.
If an individual is not able to perform Qurbani on their own, they may allow someone to complete Qurbani on their behalf.
In today’s day and age, it’s not uncommon for Muslims to donate to a nonprofit organization that will perform Qurbani on their behalf. So, if your nonprofit organization will be performing Qurbani somewhere in the world this year, here’s a quick tutorial on how to edit your donation categories.
How do I add Qurbani donation categories to my Feeling Blessed donation page?
Login to your nonprofit Admin Dashboard at https://www.nonprofits.feelingblessed.org/
On the left menu, select “Settings.”
Now, a new Settings menu will appear towards the top. Click “Donations.”
You should now see your current Donation Categories. Click the blue “Edit” button to change these.
Add Qurbani Donation Categories and set the minimum donation amount accordingly.
It’s important to add a separate category for each option your nonprofit is offering. Be as descriptive as possible in the Donation Category name!
Example: “Qurbani - 1 goat - India - $100”
After you’ve added all of your Donation Categories, remember to click the blue “Save” button at the bottom of the Edit page.
When you send your donors your Slug URL (this is your organization’s page on the Feeling Blessed platform), they’ll be able to donate to your new Qurbani Donation Categories.
